Days 4/5

The person I've most enjoyed meeting and getting to know this week is a tie between two people: Bill Seng, the Chief; and Neil, the paramedic. Chief Seng has a wonderful sense of humor. He welcomed me right into the station's family dynamic and immediately showed interest in getting to know me. He told me funny stories about my mom's days on the Metro Council and gave me some solid advice for my future. Neil is one of the most outwardly friendly people on the team. During my days in the ambulance, he would walk me through every motion he went through in the process of transporting a patient. Neil always made sure I was enjoying myself and learning something new about EMS. While these two definitely stand out in my mind, I've truly enjoyed getting to know everyone in my capstone project and their respective personalities. Days 4 and 5 were a little sad. I spent the days with my favorite crews and went out to lunch with them both days. I didn't realize how muc

Day Five: Jacquelyn

Well, this book is taking me longer than I thought it would, and I'll likely have to keep working on it for a bit before our presentations in May. I have the main storyline done, but I had to work on making the story more fluid, instead of the choppy sentences I had created to use the vocabulary words. Using the same three graphics of the monkey that I was able to find online is getting a bit boring to be honest, but I don't really have any other options, so I'm continuing as is. I think it's good that I'll have to keep working on it for a bit though, so I'll also be forced to remember the characters I've learned this week.

Day 5 - Ethan K

Day 5 was our least productive day yet. The replacement part that we had ordered with 1-day shipping did in fact, not ship in 1 day. Amazon wasn't able to move the part to UPS' respective warehouse in time for the part to be shipped to us. Without that replacement part, we are unable to do anything with our tractor beam. Instead, we took a field trip to Erath's house to pick up his extensive variety of hot sauces to take back to school and taste test on crackers. The sauces were tasty and some spicy. In the end, we were unable to do anything so no work was done. We did manage to get our hands on an oscilloscope which will be necessary when we need to test all of our transducers. But that is for another time in the future when we have all of our parts and are able to successfully run our tractor beam.

Day 4, 5 - Eli Allen

Day 4: Dud and I had a conference Thursday so we were MIA. _______________________________________________________________ Day 5: I woke up in the morning, and I showered, played 2K, and then made my way to Slater's house to meet everyone. We first put Slater's two mountain bikes on the back of my mother's Toyota Highlander. Then we proceeded to mount the Freytag's kayak on Slater's sister's SUV. After we loaded up all our materials, we headed East towards Beckley Park–stopping for a bite a Dairy Queen on the way. When we arrived we got the kayak down and walked it to the creek. I used my GoPro clamp and attached it to the front of the kayak so that it got a good shot as we moved down river. Slater and I kayaked first then Nate and Tuan followed; however, their ride did not go as swimmingly as ours. Despite Nate's numerous remarks that, "[They]'d be fine," the two nailed a tree and capsized. Luckily, nothing was damaged or lost

Day 4/5

Image
Thursday was a rather uneventful day. We made a button board that would allow us to move our polyurethane ball up and down, but without the part we ordered we couldn't conduct any other tests on our device. We called our work day done early and went home, ready to get the project done the following day Friday. What a day. Although it had a poor start, the day progressively got better. It was Ethan Kincaid's birthday, so I went out and bought donuts for everyone to share. Unbeknownst to me, Ethan also brought in donuts, so we had 24 donuts to split between 6 people. Our part never shipped out of California, and it wasn't going to come until 8 PM, so we couldn't conduct any tests on our device. We figured out the source of our problem, which was that we had plugged the battery in the wrong way which caused the part to short circuit. All of these problems could have been prevented had we just matched the red and black wires on the battery to the red and black wires on th

Day 5

I am more than amazed at the entirety of this project. Today, I finally  implemented and finished the cello solo and the corresponding violin 1, violin 2, viola, and bass parts. To say the least, I think the cello solo is gorgeous. Right after the cello solo, I had to come up with an ending, so I used a couple different key and tempo changes to really bring out a 'bittersweet' sound. Even though the piece has now been written in its entirety, I still feel that certain parts might need to be slightly altered to fit the mood and general feel of the piece better.

Day 5: Grayson

Our last day of capstone was one of our busiest days of the week. Will and I began the day at the coveted, Wild Eggs, and enjoyed a build your own omelet (which was a very unique order style) and a chocolate chip pancake. We then visited the local deli, Cheddar Box, and experienced their old fashioned style home cooking. We also found out that a few LCS students actually work at Cheddar Box! We ended off our long week at Tokyo Japanese Restaurant where Will and I finally enjoyed a change in the food culture and ate sushi. This restaurant was unique in the way that the sushi is made in front of you, and it was something we enjoyed. Overall, our day was a great success.

DAY 5: On Friday I went to SeaWorld to meet with Lori Cherry. She and her coworker JP, who graduated from St. X in Louisville, showed me around the manatee rescue operation at SeaWorld. They took me behind the scenes to tell me all about the manatees they rescue and how they nurse them back to health. It turns out they care for manatees in a very similar way that doctors care for humans. There were about ten different pools in the manatee rescue center, and each had manatees needing a different amount of care. There was an emergency room, an ICU (intensive care unit), and all other pools in which doctors checked on the manatees different amounts. I learned why, how, and when they rescue manatees all across America. It was so cool to get to see and learn about SeaWorld's rescue operations. After the tour, we got free access to the rides and the park for the rest of the day!

Rachel Horowitz - Day 5

Yesterday I worked more on the hair would have finished it had I not run out of the light blue string. After getting more string, I also began to work on the turtleneck, for which I will use a blanket stitch and fill in each square with a satin stitch in various shades of green. Yesterday I could not find the prompt on the blog (and have yet to find it) which is why it took me so long to post this recap.

day 5

Friday was very similar to Thursday since we finished our hours within 2 days. Even though I've spent the last few days relaxing and reflecting on my capstone experience I found myself getting detached from my phone more and more. Detaching from my phone had always been a problem for me in the past, but now it's not. Those 2 days without my phone has really helped me change for the better because although I still use my phone, I don't use it as often. Instead of being on my phone all day I enjoy spending quality time together, interacting and having conversations with my friends and family.

Day 5 - Leah Burke

Today was so fun! I got to hangout with my bestie and bring her along as I got ready for prom! We went to Drybar (where I work) and to the makeup place and had a blast! The Prom was downtown in a really cool location! Overall I had a great day and will miss making and editing videos like I have been doing throughout this project.

Day 5: Toree Doll

Friday was a lot like Thursday in the sense that I still missed being around my friends. I found that I also am very reliant on my phone still even with the day break and that I may need to limit myself to social media, and I'm thinking about starting with deleting instagram. Being without my phone was hard at first, but I was able to manage. Although camping didn't go as planned, it taught me not to be as dependent on my phone.

Day 5 - elena tarullo

The last day was one of my favorites! I find the editing process so fun because you can really see what is in your head become something tangible. The editing process can be very hard for both me and Owsley because we tend to self critique but besides the bumps in the road I thought  it was a really fun experience and I learned a lot.

Day 5 - Slater

Today was the last day of our capstone project and adventure. We began the day at my house, were we prepared for the day. We loaded the kayak onto my car and put all the bikes on Eli's car. We then started our journey to Floyd's Fork Park, where we planned to take turns kayaking down rapids and then go on a mountain bike expedition down the rough paths of the park. On our way, we stopped at Dairy Queen, for obvious reasons (it's delicious). Next, we arrived at the park. Eli and I kayaked first, and it went very well. However, when Nate and Tuan went, they flipped the boat, and almost lost their phones and GoPros. They were soaking wet, but we persisted. We went biking after that, down the paths of the park at a fast pace. However, our day was cut slightly short when it started raining and the temperature dropped at the park. So, we headed home around 6 and concluded our memorable and insightful capstone experience.

Day 5 - Hadley Cory

For our final day of Capstone, Leah and I had a lot of fun filming our final video :-)! Since Leah had to spend the day getting ready for prom anyway, we decided to film a get ready with us ~prom edition~. The video will be hitting Youtube later today, and it features the whole prom process of getting hair done, makeup done, etc. We've really enjoyed Capstone and exploring Youtube vid talents and are sad to see it go :-(

Day 4 and 5 - Kaylee

Since we got all of our hours done in 2 days, these last 2 days have been pretty similar. I do miss being around my school friends in a setting that is not school and without technology. This allowed us to fully enjoy the company of one another and bond. I do miss just being able to call their name and talk to them right there, because now I have to text or call them if I want to be with them or talk. With the technology part, I realized how reliant I am on "staying connected' using my phone, so for these past few days, I have tried to limit my phone usage. This is hard to do, but I think it is helping me relax a little more.

Caroline Brehm- Day 5

Image
I really enjoyed my last day of Capstone. Seeing my quilt come together and being able to take it home was an immensely rewarding experience. I got slightly frustrated when I completed the border because my lines aren't completely straight and it didn’t come out perfect. Nevertheless, I’m so proud of what I’ve done, and I could not have been more pleased with the final product. Throughout this process, I’ve learned patience, dedication, and precision. My Capstone was frustrating at times and  joyous at others, and I’m so thankful for this experience.

Day 5 Natalie Beckman

on Day 5 Friday I started a new project with the same mindset as the day before. I painted the background golden with horizontal, large, grainy brushstrokes. I then took a deep crimson and purple oil paint mixture and drew the human body in focus on muscular tissue. I followed a biology graphic of the muscles of the human body and used that as a guide to my thick lines of oil paint.

Day 4 Natalie Beckman

On day 4 Thursday I began a new project and enjoyed trying new ideas and techniques. I first painted a red background wirh very rough and disorderly brushstrokes. I then took black oil paint and painted a very simplistic graphic face without concrete or realistic structure. I wnjoyed playing with non realisitic figures and vibrant colors to offset the black paint. I then added white feathers around the face.

Day 5

Today was the final day of trading. I sold the stocks which I still had and then reflected on how I had done throughout the process. I looked back over the market and any of the stocks which I wanted to invest in but did not and investigated their results. Finally, I looked how to create an account with real money and discussed the chances of me starting an account with my parents.

Day 3 Natalie Beckman

On Day 3 Wednesday, I went to visit my supervisor Ms Koester who gave me suggestions for my first two art pieces. On the glue project, she advised that I add orange to the purple and green color scheme I had. On the clay and ink pen project, she suggested that I strengthen the composition by mixing the ink pen drawing and clay on both sides of the canvas. I took both of these suggestions and completed my first two projects before moving on to my next two.

Friday: Isabell Carrico

Today was uneventful and short. I got to the office went straight to make my hot chocolate. This time I did not run into the wall, burn my tongue, nor did I spill it! That itself is a win. I quickly finished my white page and turned it into my supervisor. After giving me a few quick edits, she told me it was perfect and that I had finished my capstone porject. I was happy to have completed something that will be sent out into the real world and shard with elected officials. It feels good to be a part of something that will help people in real life and make a difference!

Day 5: Grace English

Image
Sorry for the late post again. Yesterday was a semi-productive work day. I am kind of frustrated because this piece is just taking a very long time. I had to redo one of the front legs because it was in the wrong spot on the dog. The correction needed to be done because otherwise the dog would have bee unbalanced and had a chance to fall over. I am also learning that for the sake of time (I want to get this piece done before my art show on March 23, please come!!), I have to get less detailed with the frame so I can finish the fur. Overall though, every day is a learning experience, and I am glad this week I've had the time to focus on my own personal improvement in wire.

Day 5: Rachel Kelsey

Today out of all the days in interim I spent less time with my phone. I was able to forget about it because I was busy with other activities. When I was able to distract myself I was able to forget about my technology.

Day 5: Garrett Sams: Why, Tysen?

Image
To be honest, for our movie to turn out well, we will need a miracle. It is more likely for Dr. Phil to go back to college to become an actual doctor than for this project to turn out well. That's sad. Dr. Phil is successful, so there's no way he'll go back, and we have 6 hours of footage, so there's no way that I will edit it in its entirety. Why do I have so much footage? Again, I think I am brilliant--the next Hemingway or Speilburg--so I think all my ideas are amazing when, in reality, I am probably 2-for-5 on good ideas. My day began with me waking up 15 minutes before my scheduled meeting with Dr. Sowell. I have had this meeting scheduled for 2 days, but I was tired, and I snoozed my alarm clock about four different times. I somehow made it to school on time and had time to shower. Wow. That is talent--time talent. On the way to school, I got a call from Ethan Essex. I hung up on him. I could see him calling me, so there was really no point. So, I pulled into

Day 5- Owsley Robinson

Our last day went really well! Elena and I continued editing and we began to see our vision come to life. One thing about the both of us is that we are perfectionists, so when we see something we want to fix we will fall into a wormhole of time and try to fix it. But with all of that perfectionism, we really try to handle the editing process with care and have really learned how important editing is to making a film of any kind come to life.

Friday- KAte

For our last day of creating our Teenager's Guide to Louisville Jane and I decided to discover some art! First we headed to the speed museum where we saw a great exhibit about Women Artists. Next we sat down to a nice lunch at The Mussel and Burger Bar and then headed across the street to check out some more art at 21C. This was a great way to end our capstone week! Overall I feel like Jane and I had a great time discovering and experiencing more of Louisville and creating a guide on our instagram account for others to use too.

Day 5: Jane Keady

Image
Kate and I spent our last day admiring art. We went to the speed museum which I loved especially because of it's women artists exhibit. We attempted to mimic the art piece shown in the picture but this was as good as it got. Then we went to Mussel and Burger Bar and it was delicious. Then went to 21c art to look at some more modern art. Overall it was a good day and a great week

Day 4

On Day 4 I had a great interview with the Dean of Students at HMI, Jess Wolinsky. We discussed tools on how she has gained trust and respect from the students, and how she had learned to deal with disciplinary actions. Jess and I became very close during my time as a student because she taught my ethics class and was a leader on one of my expeditions. It was so good to sit down and catch up!

Day 5- Ethan Essex

I'm not sure if I'm still supposed to be doing these, but I guess I'll go ahead and do one last one.  I didn't see a prompt for today so I guess I'll just kind of wing it.  We finally finished filming today, at least we realize there are major plot holes that we have to refilm scenes for.  The script we wrote before this week was actually good, but then when we started filming and realized memorizing lines was time-consuming and it was way more fun to improv everything.  This created many logical flaws in the scenes we filmed.  The shots that were pretty on script were usually ruined by Tysen unknowingly being in the background of the shots playing with our tripod.  Not going to lie though he kind of has a right to do that considering we gave him around 4 lines in our 50+ page script.  I would be mad if I were Tysen too, but I'm not.  Other than that the only speed bumps we ran into were our outfits sporadically changing throughout days, wind interference, findi

Day 5- Hallie

Image
Today was great! We spent the day adding final touches and trying to upload the video! We have run into some troubles with uploading, so hopefully we can figure that out tomorrow. This process has been super fun and I am so happy with our final product! I cannot wait for everyone to see the documentary!

Day 5- Piper

Image
Today we recreated Degas Dancers and "Two Girl at a Piano" by Renoir. We also recreated a moment from Heathers. Today was so fun! Ms. Kinnison was very generous to let us use the costume closet for our pictures. Working with Sarah and Carter this week has been wonderful! I have loved every minuet of this project with them. They are so creative and wonderful. Below are some pictures of what we did today.

Day 5 - Anna Hurst

The last day of our capstone went well! We put music in the video, and it just pulled the whole thing together. The only issue we are having right now is uploading it to YouTube since the file is so big. Overall though, this was a really rewarding project, and I loved getting know the younger students that I normally wouldn’t have talked to. I’m really looking forward to showing the final product to others!

Day 5: Carter Jay

Image
The last day of Capstone was great!! We met at school, figured out our plan for the day, and went to a thrift shop. At the thrift shop we looked for costumes for a new picture we decided to add to our collection. Unfortunately, we could not find anything. We went back to school and started our pictures. We borrowed a majority of our costumes today from the drama department. We realized that a big theme for our project was learning to work with what we had, rather than trying to make a perfect interpretation.

Uspiritus DAY 5--CLAIRE FOLEY

Image
Today I went to Uspiritus and we painted! Woohoo! The kids seemed to have fun and we got some great results. Some of them even told me they were glad we were doing this project and thanked me multiple times. This group of kids was definitely challenging but always extremely good hearted. I am so excited to collage their work onto mine and deliver the piece on Monday for them to hang it either in the lunchroom or common area. Here are some photos of our work!

Day 5 - Meredith Schulten

My last day of Capstone was a great way to end the week. I went out to row in the morning and went the furthest I've gone all week. On my way back, there were 3 dolphins that were following my boat. I watched them, but then they disappeared for awhile so I continued rowing. I was very startled when the dolphins reappeared. I was expecting them to come tot he top of the water again; however, they came up right at the edge of my oar, which is only about 3 or 4 feet away from me. Not expecting them to come that close, I jumped back and almost fell out of my boat into the water. After regaining my balance i continued rowing slowly and the dolphins followed me, still at the edge of my oar. I was amazed at how close they came to me. I could see the details of their dorsal fins, their eyes, their blowholes. They followed me all the way down the marina until they trailed off towards the shore. Sadly, I don't have a picture of them since I don't take my phone out on the water with m

Day 5: Grady Stevens

Image
Note that I didn't post yesterday due to having gone to the merit scholar youth conference thing. I adjusted my daily hours to compensate for this. Today I watched Thor Ragnarok and finished both a review for The Shawshank Redemption and Thor Ragnarok. My review for Thor is slightly shorter than the others only because I was nearly running out of time in the day. I don't feel as though this really negatively impacted the review though, as I only really omitted the summary section of the review. I plan on working on the paper tomorrow. Link to blog below. At the time of this posting the review for Thor is not up due to technical difficulties; however, I hope to have it all sorted out soon.  https://bestcapstoneproject.wordpress.com/

Day 5 - Sascha Post

We spent our last day of Capstone putting finishing touches on all our food reviews which can be found on our Instagram page @louisville_cheap_eats. Overall, our Capstone has been really fun since we have been able to travel to different parts of the city all while sampling new foods. We were able to try some foods that we would not have tried otherwise such as tongue and tripe, and we were also able to try new takes on more classic foods such as pizza. Overall, our Capstone experience has been great!

Days 2, 3, 4 and 5

We have been watching many movies in the past couple days. We watched the Shawshank redemption along with step brothers one night, while watching the dark night and Thor Ragnorark the other night. What has been really surprising to me is the podcast quality over time. We had special guests Grady and Tysen with us during the dark night podcast and we found their insights to be very deep. We got into the meat of the characters while discussing what really makes a good movie. Overall I would say that this project is going very well.

Day 5

Today I put the finishing touches on my jacket and pants. Afterwards I planned out how I wanted to incorporate the original Amazon colors; orange and grey, into a dress together. While orange and grey look good on our field hockey shirts, using those colors in a dress is a little more tricky. I finally decided on making a high low dress with a halter top in grey with a visible orange lining. I then cut out my pattern and began constructing.

Day 4

I've enjoyed getting to know my friends better during our camping experience, without the use of technology. Even though we completed our hours within 2 days, I still feel as if we have become closer in such little time. Camping has definitely helped me become less reliant on my phone, helped me interact with other,  helped me be able to enjoy the present and carry on a conversation with others. Camping definitely didn't go as expected, but not only did it help me better understand  my friends but I also gained a better understanding of myself.

Day 4: Will Stevens

Kathy Cary, former Collegiate alum and owner of Lily's Bistro, has been the person that I have enjoyed meeting the most through my capstone experience. She was able to provide unique insight about the food business as well as tell us about her experience as a restaurant owner for thirty years. She said that one of the keys to staying in business for so long and maintaining success was having  a good, hard-working, loyal, and honest staff because it allows the restaurant to function better as a whole. Grayson and I were also able to enjoy some of her great food and receive a tour of the kitchen to witness where the magic takes place.

Day 4: Grayson

While Will and I have met some very interesting people in the food industry this week, our favorite was Lilly's Bistro owner and former LCS alum, Kathy Cary. Mrs. Cary gave us a tour of her kitchen and gave us tremendous insight on her business and what has given her success for 30+ years. We were also able to enjoy a great dinner from her bistro as well. We now have her contact info if we need further information about her great restaurant or the food business in general.

Day 4-uspiritus Mural, CLAIRE FOLEY

Image
Today I continued my prep work for tomorrow. I enjoyed painting and cutting the buildings out for the kids. So basically, I am giving each kid a building in the skyline and they are going to decorate it however they want. I am also making faces that will go around the globe and represent different types of people coming together (the younger kids will do those). Once it is finished, I will collage all the different pieces from the kids onto the large canvas.  I am also going to include positive words in the space between the buildings and the yellow stripe.

day four: caroline doyle

I really enjoyed getting to know my friends on a whole new level while camping. We have all been really close throughout our time at Collegiate, but there's something about being in the woods with no phones that really brought us together. We have hung out since camping and it's now easier to have conversations without the distraction of our phones.

Day 4

Today I reinvested in gold as the stock price dropped again. This was a risk as the trend is uncertain and could easily continue to fall or raise. I also spent a day with a past day trader and learned about their experiences in the stock market. They made the decision to pull their money out of stocks and invest in property and I thought of this as a good and interesting perspective.

Day 4: Jane Keady

Image
I've enjoyed meeting the employee at Lazer Blaze. He was really crazy and could probably tear it up in lazer tag. He was showing us some of his cool tricks. He can actually shoot people when he's not looking. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Today we went to Paint Spot and I had the best time. I think it was calming and enjoyable to just sit down and paint. We went to Lou Lou Food and Drink for lunch and they had amazing cheese sticks. Then we drove down river road for a sunset drive. It was a good day.

Thursday: Isabell Carrico

Today was a slower paced day with only one meeting and one interview. The rest of the day I spent working on my white paper. With all this down time I have had to the chance to sit back and enjoy the excitement that comes with working in the administrative part of the hospital. I spent some time trying to compare my life in my cubicle to the show The Office, but failed to find any similarities. While trying to keep myself entertained I discovered the break room. I was disappointed when I did not find any snackies, but behold there was a keurig that in fact made hot chocolate. Yes I had hit the jackpot. I was walking out of the break room and was so excited to try my hot chocolate that I simultaneously burned my tongue and ran head on into the wall. Lucky for me, no one saw me, but I did unknowingly leave behind a trail of hot chocolate (I awkwardly heard the maintenance workers complaining about it later: sorry maintenance). Overall, I have enjoyed getting to know everyone involved in

Day 4 - Umar Nasim

The Louisville Leadership Summit was an interesting experience, some different perspective as older people talked about how to market to Gen Z and leadership. In relation to our Captsone, today was the WOAT. The part we were needing to replace exploded, so we definitely need a new one now, BUT the one that was supposed to get here today somehow ended up in California, so we can't do anything. I worked on my paper explaining the tractor beam mechanism some, but other than that, very little progress.

Day 3 - Umar Nasim

Wednesday was pretty frustrating. Abshir worked on attaching the speakers to the dome head and I worked with the Ethans of the circuitry of the tractor beam. We had it working for a bit, there was a light on and stuff, so we turned it off. We tried to turn it back on later, but nothing happened and the DC converter started to spark and smoke. After this incident it didn't turn on again, so we order a new part that should arrive by Thursday, but won't be there because the Louisville Leadership Summit thing

Day 1 - Zeno K Tapp

Today I was able to shadow the stable manager as he helped take care of the horses. I mostly did stall work and helped brush and clean the equines. I also got to use the tractor which was great fun and ensured that each stall was up to the standards of the owners. Afterwards, I was able to sit in on a couple of lessons and observe the trainer giving tips to some of the eventers and even got some tips myself to help me in becoming a better rider.

Day 4 - Ethan K

Day 4 was our worst day yet. Day 3 ended with us realizing that we shorted an important electronic part and had to order a new one. The part was supposed to arrive at the end of Day 4 yet didn't even show up in the end. Anyways, the morning started off with me trying to test our device and didn't notice that the battery was on backward. When I turned on the device I heard a little sizzle for a brief second and then the part which we are replacing literally exploded. Now it wasn't a large explosion, more like a poof. But it still left residue on the table and the top of my computer. So clearly that part is officially broken. We cannot do anything further until we get a replacement. The part didn't even come in last night but instead was shipped to California or something, ridiculous. Progress has been firmly halted. Who knows what Day 5 will bring us, probably nothing.

Day 4: Grace English

Image
I worked on the front legs of the dog today and they look pretty good so far. The frustrating part about this whole project is that making the dog is going to take a really long time to finish and I'm having a hard time bending the 12 gauge wire the way I need it to go. I also went to go see the pre-k kids again yesterday to show them my dog, and they all surprised me by pulling out some pipe cleaner creations they had made yesterday! It made me so happy to see all the kids so excited about art!!! Besides, I used to make stuff out of pipe cleaners when I was around their age, too, so I got all nostalgic watching them work on little flowers and hearts :) Overall a tough but good day.

Capstone Day 5 - Ilya Verekhman

Today was the day where I completed my certification. I got up bright and early around 7:15 AM to head down to the pier at Fort Lauderdale. I got on the boat and we headed about 20-30 minutes out into the ocean to visit a wreck. As I was descending down to the ocean floor where the wreck was, it was kind of scary at first because I did not have any visibility until I got to the wreck because the wind and rain mixed up the ocean water with the sand. It was very cool and I have a couple videos below showing the marine life surrounding the wreck. On the second dive, we went to a shallow reef which was pretty cool to see the homes of fishes and other sea creatures. The reef is not as vibrant as the one in Key Largo because the reef there is protected, but I'll take what I can get. I collected some dead coral on the reef floor and a shell that a sea slug used to live in or some other animal. I have a video below of the reef as well.

Day 4 - Anna Hurst

It was really rewarding to meet Ms. Allen, the first grade teacher we interviewed for our video. She talked about how deeply invested she was in the school since she was a lifer, and her mom and sister were alums. I didn't know any of this about Ms. Allen, so it was really rewarding to hear how she still retains her deep connection to Collegiate and how she is still close to many of her former classmates.

Day 4 - Rachel Horowitz

Image
I’ve just been doing my embroidering at home, so I haven’t really gotten to know anyone a lot better through this experience. However, I did learn that Ms. Brundige, my supervisor, has also done embroidery before. Today I spent most of my day at the Louisville Leadership Conference, but still managed to make a lot of progress on the hair.

Caroline Brehm- Day 4

Image
I made a lot of progress today. I sewed the borders onto the original design, and I began the process of securing the design to the batting and backing of the quilt. Sewing between the seams of all the pictures is tedious, but it is excited to be almost done. It has been great to work with a family friend, Eleanor, during this experience. Quilting can be extremely difficult, but Eleanor is always there to help me learn a new stitch or replace the bobbin thread when it runs out. I now have a much greater appreciation for how much practice and patience it takes to become really good at quilting. I’ve loved getting to spend more time with Eleanor and grow closer as we tackle the final parts of the quilt.

Day 4 - Slater

Today, Tuan and Eli were busy for most of the day. So, when I woke up at nates, Nate and I began reviewing footage and editing the pictures and videos we took from the first three days. We soon took a lunch break and made the short trip to the one and only, Panda Express. I ordered a bowl and Nate got the plate. Later on, we met with Eli and Tuan, were we continued the editing process. We experimented with many different editing techniques. I am very excited for everyone to see the final product. Tomorrow we will gather more footage at the park and then finalize editing. See you guys at the finish line.

Day 2 and 3 - Slater

I accedently wrote this on Google+ or something, but here it is: Today, Tuan, Nate, Eli, and I woke up and headed straight to Waffle House, where we decided to start our long road trip to Red river Gorge. After that lunch, we picked up supplies at Walmart and then drove to the gorge. After the long drive, we all had to use the restroom, so we stopped at a log cabin, where we got free shirts and tanks! After that, we hiked to the natural bridge and took cool pictures of the sunset up there. After the sun had set, we headed to our campsite, where we set up our enos, and then started our campfire. We cooked hotdogs over the fire, then s’mores. We then went to sleep, but were rudely awakened by snow and freezing temperatures, so we moved to the car to sleep. When we woke up the next day, we cleaned up the rest of our supplies and headed to Raphies fun center in Gaslow, Kentucky. At raphies, we bowled, skated, golfed, and played games. We also bonded through a breakout game, which we did

Day 4

Today I finally finished my suit! Yay! Tomorrow I’m planning on starting another piece. Throughout this week I haven’t really had a chance to get to really know anyone better, since my project is a pretty solidary one. I will say that I was surprised at how many people were willing to donate their kilts to me, because those uniform kilts aren’t the cheapest. Also this week I’ve been able to experience the creativity and imagination of all my friends capstones. I’ve had to through paint and glitter on myself for a music video, and perform my Miranda Priestly impersonation for a movie.

Day 4 - Elena Tarullo

I have loved getting to know Owsley better! I think we work really well together because we have similar visions and are great at bouncing ideas off each other. Going through the creative process with Owsley has been so much better than if I did it alone. We haven't really had any disagreements because I feel like we are very good at communicating and respecting each other. Even though sometimes we get tired and feel like taking a break or giving up I think we've gotten to know each other even more and have learned to motivate each other throughout the process.

Day 4: Garrett Sams: The Longest Day of my life.

Image
What a day. I knew today would be rough as I woke up at 7:00 AM to go to a "leadership conference" with Mr. Long. The conference was at the Kentucky Center, and every male there (except for the Collegiate kids and Mr. Long) wore a baggy suit. Also, there was a woman with a beret on yelling the name "Blanch" in the middle of the lobby. Don't know what that was about. Hopefully, she found "Blanch." Regardless, the conference took place in the coldest theater in which I have ever stepped foot. The coldness did not deter me from falling asleep as a woman talked about how Generation Z (my generation) loved "the snapchat." She's right. In all seriousness, I love snapchat. While I sat, listening to the keynote, Eli was breaking records, eating handfuls of free muffins. I don't know how many he ate, but I'd say enough to kill a horse. One thing was apparent about every speaker, they all knew how to make terrible jokes. One keynote spea

Day 4- Ethan Essex

Image
Well, today was a lighter day for me, Garrett had something with school so we didn't have to start working until 4:30.  I wish I could say I've met somebody or gotten to know someone else better through this project, but that would be a lie.  I've been with Tysen and Garrett who I already knew pretty well.  I guess I have gotten to know Mrs. Sams a little better, she insisted that I tried some of Garrett's probiotic-packed yogurt drink called Kefir.  I did not enjoy Garrett's Kefir, it was gross.  Imagine drinking a Danimals with no sugar and only healthy things added.  That is Kefir. Below is a picture of myself meditating in the movie:

Day 4- Piper

Image
Today my group recreated a scene from Gossip Girl and Friends. We also recreated "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth and Frida Kahlo's "Self Portrait".  I have really enjoyed getting to know my group members more. I already know they are wonderful people. But I have really enjoyed learning their perspectives on the projects we do. I love seeing new things that I may have missed before.

Wednesday: Isabell Carrico

My project has taught me many thing different things regarding health care so far,  but I think the most rewarding part of my project so far has been seeing how my work and the administration's work positively effects the patients. Every decision made is always done in hopes of giving the patient a better experience at the hospital. Today I had the pleasure of interviewing two women both of whom are involved in the public policy side of healthcare. I got the chance to go to the state capital and see the elected officials offices. Then I returned to my cubicle and began working on my final project: the white paper to present to the elected officials rewarding the Network for Advancing Behavioral Health.

Day 4- Hallie Burke

Image
I have enjoyed getting to know the lower school students and middle school students I do not normally talk to. I have liked getting to see the other aspects of Collegiate through these students. Anna and I are super close to being finished with our documentary and I am very excited to see everything at the end. Hopefully tomorrow we can fix last minute details upload our video!

CORN-DAY 3 and 4

Okay! So yesterday as I was working, Nick came by to work on our mixtape. We divided up the songs of when each one of us is rapping and we also came up with lots of our rap lines. Each one of the songs we would go through and come up with some lines in our song and just figure out who's rapping when. That was all we really did today. The next day, we met today at my house and worked on the music video. We might have to reshoot some of the stuff on it but we'll use what we can use and work from there. Also to get a good vibe of the rap genre, Nick went to the Chief Keef concert to get a real vibe of the rap genre. That's about it for today!

Day 4:

Although my capstone project is over, reflecting on our camping experience I think that I learned a lot about myself and how I react to certain situations, in this case times of panic. I got to know myself better by putting myself in a situation that I'm not used to. I learned that I really dislike wind and that the wind makes me feel sad. By getting to know myself better I know now to never put myself in that kind of situation ever again.

Day 3/4: henry stites

Today I met with two individuals, both of whom work within the school, in order to gain more insight on the project. First I met with Mik Basham. I showed him my proposal, and in return he told me about the logistics that would go into a project like this. It was unfortunate to find out that all of the fields at champions trace are lined with irrigations pipes. Therefore, I cannot build at that site. Luckily, I never lose. I just learn. So my capstone may not be something I can actually do, but the learning process has been invaluable. Next I met with Stephanie Disney. She handles a lot of the fundraising at Collegiate. She gave me some perspective on the project and told me about the school's strategy on raising money. Overall, it was an educational day. See you tomorrow.

Day 4 - Sascha Post

While I really haven't met anyone new during Capstone, I've been able to visit a lot of new places. Overall, I have really enjoyed learning more about the city of Louisville and some of the things that this city has to offer. Even though I've lived here my whole life, I feel like there is still a lot I have to learn about Louisville, and I'm glad that I have devoted my Capstone to begin finding out new things about Louisville.

Day 4 - Meredith Schulten

Image
Today was sort of chaotic. It was too windy to go rowing today so I went to the Hilton Head Crew boat house to watch the high school team. Only 2 of their shells went out on the water today, and only for a short while, because they had fixed a piece on their shells and were testing them before loading up for their regatta in Orlando. They had a lot to do while loading the trailer for their trip to Orlando. They had to get out all the shells they were using in the competition and de-rig them, which took a long time. They put all the oars in the trailer along with the chairs, coolers, equipment, etc. Then every team member was needed to put the shells onto the trailer and to strap them to the trailer. Although it was cold and windy, I still had a good time because everyone on the team is so fun and energetic. They were blasting music from their speakers, dancing, and yelling at each other (not in a mean way). I am including a picture of the trailer because loading the boats in trailer.

Day 4 - Phil Lin

Image
Nothing is really special today for me. I worked at home for two hours today then I switched to Starbucks. Even though it took me 25 minutes to get there but it was a good exercise in a way. The content is getting more and more interesting and I am glad that I find them interesting so I won't quit in the middle.

Capstone Day 4 - Ilya Verekhman

I really got to know one of my instructors. It was so interesting being able to listen to his story about how he used to be a surgeon and an airfare pilot stationed half way across the world. He is retired now, but it just fascinates me that after he retired, he decided to keep up with scuba diving and teach it to others. It is amazing at some of the stories we hear from people. A person may seem one way, but underneath is actually someone completely different. Today I stayed at home and reviewed how to better practice neutral buoyancy for tomorrow. I will be visiting a wreck and a reef tomorrow. More pictures to come!

Day 4: Rachel Kelsey

Today I’ve felt myself distant a lot from my phone. I’ve been able to turn off my notifications for some of my apps. Although I’m able to do this, I am still using my phone a lot. I think my experience with camping was very helpful. I am able to put my phone down when talking to others. I hope this continues in the future.

Day 4 - Isaac Wolff

Image
Through my capstone project, I have gotten to learn about my advisor, Mr. Gahan; in fact, I learned a total of 3 things about Mr. Gahan. I learned these 3 things about Mr. Gahan when he visited my house yesterday to see how my capstone project was progressing. Right as he parked in front of my house, I learned the first thing: Mr. Gahan drives a minivan, and I respect that. The second thing I learned about Mr. Gahan is that he always has a fantastic outfit. Being that he had no classes yesterday, you would think that he might wear jeans and a t-shirt when making his visits; however, Mr. Gahan arrived to my house wearing a button up, tie, and a sports coat, and I respect that. Finally, the third thing I learned about Mr. Gahan is that he has an amazing preference for fast food. Before Mr. Gahan arrived at my house, Levi and I were eating lunch at Skyline Chili. Knowing that I would see him soon, I decided to text Mr. Gahan asking if he would like anything. Mr. Gahan replied wit

DAY 4: SMutombo

Image
Since I don't have any classes with Carter or Piper this year, spending Capstone with has been so much fun! Also, Piper's mom studied art and has so many wonderful insights on the art we are doing, and I am always so impressed with how much she knows! It was her suggestion to do the Frida piece on Carter, and it turned out so good!

Thursday- Kate

Today Jane and I enjoyed painting at the paint spot and then a delicious lunch at Cafe Lou Lou. To finish out our day we went for a sunset drive on River Road. I think that over the week Jane and I have gotten to know each other even better and have learned more about what each of us likes to do the most. Overall we have had a great time hanging out and getting to spend a lot of quality time together completing our Teenager's Guide to Louisville.

Day 4: Carter Jay

Image
We haven't really met anyone new besides the middle school guidance counselor. However, I have had so much fun working with my group. We work really well together and we always agree when it comes to what pictures to pick. Today we took 4 pictures all in different locations.

Day 3 - Leah Burke

Image
I haven't really met anyone new throughout my Capstone, because I have just been working with one of my best friends, Hadley. We have really enjoyed getting even closer throughout this experience and I have really enjoyed it. It has also been really fun to learn the ropes of Youtube and why people love being apart of the family so much.

Day 4 - Hadley Cory

Throughout my Capstone I haven’t really met any new people, but I have been working alongside one of my best friends which I’ve really enjoyed! Leah and I have so many of the same interests that it has made working together super easy and fun. So far, working alongside a best friend has been one of the best part of Capstone!

Day 4- Owsley Robinson

I have really enjoyed getting to know Elena better, especially sharing this creative experience with her. She and I have really similar creative visions and she is an amazing person to exchange ideas with. We've also had a lot of fun in the process too, since we both have learned the lesson of not taking ourselves too seriously and that some of the best things happen when we trust the process and have fun. Today we learned how editing our film has a lot of surprises in store. We learned that we have to be open to what changes editing might throw our way!

Day 4- Elle Summerfield

Image
DAY 4: Today was definitely the most exciting thus far! I drove to Blue Springs again to see the manatees because I thought since it was colder today, more manatees would go into the spring. When I arrived, a SeaWorld rescue truck was pulling in behind us. It turns out the truck was releasing two young orphan manatees who they had taken care of the past two years. I got to watch the whole process of tagging and releasing the manatees, and I also got to interview the manatee vet at SeaWorld, and the director of public relations. The director of public relations, Lori Cherry, went to Rhodes College, and she and my mom bonded over that. She then invited me to come to SeaWorld tomorrow to have a private behind the scenes tour of SeaWorld and all of their efforts to rescue and protect manatees and other sea animals. She said this tour will also mean I will get to enter SeaWorld for free and enjoy the park all afternoon after the tour, so even though witnessing the manatee release today was

Day 4: Toree Doll

Because we got all our hours in two days, today our we didn't get to see each other. However, I do miss being able to talk with my friends rather than texting them or communicating through social media. One of the better memories was when Kaylee and Rachel Kelsey were in their enus while Caroline, Karissa, Rachel M., and I were sitting around them chatting and gossiping. It was a great time and even though it didn't go as planned, it was a great experience.

Day 4

Image
I haven't met anyone new this week, but it has been interesting to hear Mr.Lerner's insights into the composition process. Working with him has been a great opportunity to learn about musical developments, transitions, and sections. I was able to see how key changes can change not only the mood of the piece, but can also develop a new section within a piece. Today, I used this knowledge to adjust certain instruments' parts (i.e. viola and bass), as their parts needed more tonal and rhythmic variation at certain spots. In short, changing up a couple things can keep each part interesting.

Day 3 - Rachel Horowitz

Image
The most rewarding part of the project so far has been seeing the embroidered design begin to resemble the original drawing that I did. Yesterday I traced my drawing onto the embroidery fabric and chose the kinds of stitches that I would use for each component of the design: outline stitch for the facial features, satin stitch for the lips and pupil, split stitch and long & short stitch for the hair, and backstitch for the outline of the shirt.

Day Four Question: Whom have you most enjoyed meeting or getting to know better through your Capstone experience?

Day 3

Today we got a good amount of are filming done, and also lined up times for future days that we could get guest cameos. The most rewarding part of our project so far is seeing all of the scenes starting to come together, and also seeing others eagerness to help us with some of our scenes.

Day 3 - Elena Tarullo

Image
I would say the most rewarding part of our process is the satisfaction of collaberation. When Owsley and I both have some half-formed ideas, we really come together and make something creative and cohesive. Seeing all of our work at the end of the day is also rewarding. Going back through the videos at night, I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing the ideas in my head are now in a medium more permanent.

Day 3: Grayson

The most rewarding experience for me was not only enjoying Dairy Kastle for the first time in 10 months, but being able to talk to Joella's employee, Will Schuhmann. Will is a former LCS classmate and communicating with him about the food industry and his experience in the Joella's workforce was very rewarding. On the first day, he was able to provide us with great insight into his job and help us determine strategy's for one of our main categories of our project. Both Will Stevens and I have known Will Schuhmann since pre-school, so it was rewarding to catch up with him during our visit.

Day 3: Toree

Image
I would say the most rewarding part about the camping trip (before it all went horrible) was how we pitched our own tents and began making our own food as well as putting our phones away. We really got to connect and learn new things about one another. We pitched our own tents, prepared our own food, started our own fire, and got to go on hikes before the weather got miserable. Also, like I stated before, an old man came over and made us move our tent, and because it was so windy, the tent wouldn't stay up. Below are pictures of before and after for the tent.

Day 3 - Ethan K

Wednesday was our most productive day yet. All of our electronic parts that we were waiting for arrived in the mail and Henes brought them in and we began working immediately. Throughout the day we got very far with the building of our tractor beam. Abshir spent the whole day building the bowl full of transducers and wiring it correctly / neatly. Henes and I spent the day working on the electronic components of the tractor beam. We got it to work on the first try and on the second try we shorted something in the main electric component and it began to smoke --> not supposed to happen. We ordered a new part and will rewire everything when it comes in. Hopefully, it will work with the new part and we can begin testing our beam.

Capstone day 3 caroline doyle

the most rewarding part of my capstone has been the time I spent with my friends. We hadn’t all been together in quite awhile so being able to be together without any distractions was really nice.

Day 3: Rachel Kelsey

I was very happy to say that we were able to escape the horrible weather and make our way back to torees house. We were very stressed trying to figure out how to get the extra hours. We soon figured out that the point was to put our technology away, so we did. We spent the rest of our time at torees having so much fun together.

Tuan Nguyen - Day 1,2,3

Image
On Day 1, we (Slater, Eli, Nate, and I) all met at Eli's house in the morning before embarking on a drive to E-Town with Eli's dad. Once in E-Town, we went to Skydive Kentucky. Before we could begin our training, we had to watch a long video of an attorney speaking and reading us some of the risks we had to be aware of. We then had to go through and fill out a very long and thorough contract which we had to sign and initial many times to waive our rights to litigate. Admittedly, I had some second thoughts during this stage of the process, as we had to sign off on our awareness of the possibility of negligence (for example, the instructor releasing the parachute too late) and gross negligence (for example, the pilot forgetting to fuel the plane). However, we all ultimately filled out the waivers and moved onto the training part of the process. In the class, the instructor explained the purpose of the different pieces of equipment: the altimeter (which acts as a sort of watch tha
